How To Make Your Bathroom a Place You Want to Be

All right, truthfully, there probably aren't too many times you think, "Hey, I really just want to hang out in the bathroom." And that's fair. But you don't have to want to hang out in the bathroom to want it to be a nice place to be when you are there.

You can change up a bathroom in a big way by taking some fairly small steps. If you aren't sure where to start, here are 4 things to focus on:

First: Lighting

It's interesting, how much lighting actually affects perception and mood. One study found that lighting had a measurable impact. Too dark or too bright, and the subjects' moods were noticeably affected, but just right and everyone's attitude improved.

Imagine carrying over that knowledge into your home. How do you know what's just right? You'll have to be the judge of that, but it's a good idea to have varying light options to accommodate everyone.

A brighter light overhead, for example, for when you need the light, can be offset with a small lamp that provides just enough light when you don't need as much. You can also add a dimmer light option to the bathroom to make it fully adjustable to cater to anyone's mood.

Second: Dimension

Pattern BathroomA boring room is a boring room is a boring room, so don't let your bathroom fall into that category. Instead, use patterns and colors to add depth and dimension and interest to your space

Look for easy ways to do this through things like shower curtains, rugs, and towels. If you're really feeling adventurous, you can always go for new floors, paint, or wallpaper. You can mix and match patterns, but try to stay consistent in your neutrals and theme colors, and look for patterns that compliment each other rather than competing for attention.

Third: Art

Wall ArtThere's nothing wrong with adding some art to your bathroom, and it can be a great way to make it feel more comfortable and homey. Whether you go for something modern like a cool print in a frame, retro, like an old sign, or classic, like a painting or serene photograph, adding that little bit of detail can make it feel more complete.

You can also add interesting pieces to your shelves and sinks, like vintage hat racks or country-inspired bottles and jars.

Fourth: Order

ShelvesClutter is one of the quickest ways to make yourself feel anxious or ill-at-ease in a space, but it's also one of the easiest things to address. When you're looking for ways to easily update your bathroom, look for storage solutions that work in the space both visually and functionally.

A set of block shelves, for instance, can fit into a corner, or use stacking containers under sinks to control the chaos. The idea is to make sure everything has a home that isn't spread out everywhere so that when you come into your bathroom, there's a sense of peace.

Every room in your house should be a place you want to be, even (and maybe sometimes especially) the bathroom. Turn it into a room you enjoy!
